STOP!
Duration Time: 92 mins
Directed/Written By: Bill Gunn
Cast: Linda Marsh, Edward Bell, Anna Aries, Marlene Clark
In Bill Gunn's groundbreaking and never released STOP (1970), author Michael Berger (Edward Bell) and wife Lee (Linda Marsh) can barely stand each other and relocate from wintery New England to Puerto Rico in hopes of both rekindling their troubled relationship and wrapping up the affairs of his brother, who murdered his own wife before committing suicide in a house Michael has now inherited. When they meet an interracial couple and experiment with spouse-swapping, a painful, pyschedelic and potentially fatal journey toward self knowledge and mutual appreciation takes place in this increasingly daring and unclassifiable work, one which, along with THE LEARNING TREE in 1969 and COTTON COMES TO HARLEM in 1970, was one of the first three major studio productions to be directed by an African-American filmmaker and perhaps the first studio movie to explicitly depict masculine homosexual intimacy. After receiving an X rating by the MPAA it was shelved by its studio, Warner Brothers.
Ticket: SATURDAY, Nov 13 - 8:00 PM
